DEADPOOL (Movie Review)

MOCKERY AT ITS FINEST

The regenerate degenerate. The story about a guy who has an insane fucked up sense of humor and even got more fucked up by a guy named Francis (oh, you dick), and he seeks revenge and the love of his perfect significant other, Vanessa. This guy is Wade Wilson, the Merc with a Mouth, the perfect Valentine´s day date, the most honorable superhero of all time. Right?

Well, look at him below. I guess he would give you a slightly different answer. One of the most anticipated movies of 2016... and oh my God, did this deliver! Both critics and audiences have praised it. These are my thoughts on Deadpool. I freaking loved every single minute of it. Why?

First of all, the script is perfect. It shows how much importance the execution of an idea has, rather than the idea itself. The story is not groundbreaking, it´s pretty simple actually: about a guy who has to save the woman she´s in love with from the guy who ruined his life, so he wants to take revenge. But, it´s the execution what´s so great and fresh. How?

Deadpool uses the breaking of the fourth wall in order to tell the story, going through some flashbacks back and forth in the smoothest way possible. It feels natural, it feels like how Deadpool would tell his origin story: twisted and with his own sense of humor, and it works. Not only does it feel natural, but it also makes you care about the characters because of the witty dialogue and their hard but understandable decisions. Even though the movie is over the top, the characters make it feel real and human, and finding that tricky balance is hard, and Deadpool nailed it.

Best part about the script? It´s incredibly dynamic. It´s an engaging love story at its core (it´s the genuine heart of the movie), it´s a dramatic revenge story, a hilarious comedy, a well-shot action-packed movie, a clever parody about superheroes. It feels relevant in today´s world, and it´s surprisingly re-watchable because of the details and the replay value (it´s really entertaining). It balances humor and drama into a very powerful and emotional story, because of Wade Wilson/Deadpool´s complexity as a character.

The characters are very well handled. Deadpool, Vanessa, Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead are the standouts, they worked really well. Why is Ryan Reynolds the best part of the movie? Because he understood and nailed the character down to every emotional level. It makes you feel sad for him for his story with Vanessa, feel happy when he gets what he wants, feel satisfied, feel anger for the damage he´s been inflicted, feel some kind of disgust by the way he jokes or the way he kills people... he´s a lovable jerk.

The guy knows who he is, he´s not a superhero, just a guy who wants everything to be right in his life. One of the best lines goes by this: "Life is an endless series of train wrecks with only brief commercial-like breaks of happiness". His life is the perfect example of that. You can tell right away that he entertains himself with his jokes here and there while he´s killing the bad guys, but... is he happy? Not really. He´s quite pissed off. He actually uses his sense of humor as defense mechanism. His anger combined with his sense of humor and his light and twisted heart for the woman he loves, makes him one of the best explored characters in the comic book genre on recent years. Not only is he damn entertaining, but compelling and intriguing as well.

Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) is the perfect compliment for the protagonist. A great sick-o character that understands Wade Wilson's actions and personality and actually makes him feel special and unique and, most importantly, happy, not miserable like he's really been. Even Deadpool feels miserable halfway through the movie, and that's called great character development by both of them, as Vanessa feels hopeless about her and his future. No, that is not a spoiler, if you're asking that yourself.

As for the X-Men characters, Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (gotta admit, it sounds pretty cool but DAMN, does it take long to write it!) are the perfect secondary characters. They give laughs and quite some philosophical moments (pay careful attention to some Colossus' lines, you can create a debate because of his interesting dialogue). NTW (yeah, an abbreviation is much better on writing) gives the perfect example about a teenager in this situation: "I don´t give a shit about anything. this is all bullshit, let´s go home, I´m angry all the time!" (it´s so funny how Deadpool makes fun of her). They both promote friendship and teamwork in the most entertaining and natural way, because they feel like people people who would hang out, have some fun and get the job done. Fantastic addition to the movie, did not expect this quality of characters.

The technical aspects of the film are FLAWLESS. Cinematography, production design, direction (Tim Miller makes a fantastic directorial debut, he´s so smooth), the shots, the pacing of the story (fast and relentless), the sound design, the visual effects, the makeup... all is used perfectly. The opening credits are one the most creative ever, because it establishes the tone for the rest of the movie (and it lives up to it and exceeds expectations).

Also, it uses the visuals and the the music (MY GOD is the music so well put together, both songs and original soundtrack) as a way of engaging storytelling, as both send quite a few messages of the tone and environment of the film (when you see the movie, you´ll probably know what I´m talking about.

The action and the violence is captured authentically well, in a way that the R-rating feels right. Despite some hardcore moments throughout the movie, some of the humor (both for moviegoers and comic-book fans) really balances the crude visual with the funny situations, and it´s noticeable the work of the production team in order to put this together in the most effective way possible. Definitely not for 7 or 8-year-old children, it´s a very mature film into it´s goofiness and cleverness.

There are so many themes worth talking about. My God, is this movie deep sometimes! It´s dramatic, it´s moving, it´s emotional, it´s brainy´, it´s hilarious and entertaining in all the themes the movie explores! It explores love, friendship, commitment, teamwork, the acceptance of change, revenge, being oneself... it´s honestly amazing how the script manages to explore all these elements in the most cohesive way. I´m still mind-blown.

First of all, love. It´s funny how this movie was promoted to be about a love story when it kind of felt like a jokey advertising, but... it´s truly a love story. It´s the perfect movie to hang out with your friends, but specially with your significant other, or whatever. Not only you can have fun with them throughout the journey, but feel and root for them to stay together, so they actually resemble real guys out in the real world. One of the most relatable and fun love stories in comic-book movies.

I love how friendship and teamwork is one of the most positive and relevant messages of the movie. The director executes in the most authentic way because of the character´s nature: they don´t necessarily agree in their way of thinking. Although, they acknowledge that the only way to stop the madness and the evil and, you know, "save the day", is by sticking your asses together. Not because of a bumpy, unfriendly and offensive start (the first interaction between Deadpool, Colossus and NTW is one of the standouts of the film) does it mean to not ask for help later and accept one another, right? Foundation of friendship, guys! In Deadpool ways, right?

The dramatic element is so well done, that the acceptance of change and revenge themes feel amazingly grounded. That´s when the conflict between Deadpool and Ajax/Francis really shines. I don´t want to spoil anything of this, because it´s one the most satisfactory experiences for the damage, the cruelty, the darkness of each scene... I was expecting good, not great. The dramatic element of the film is what really made the film special to me because it felt like a grounded Bryan Singer X-Men movie: the conflict, the stakes, the story and the characters feel real. And that´s is something I have to applaud to this movie, it´s spectacular.

Gripes? Flaws? not really, just a couple. I loved the villain, I think he worked perfectly as the counterpart of the "hero" (Wade Wilson) and the dramatic element of the story, because of Deadpool´s feeling of revenge against him. But I kind of wanted to know a bit more of the organization (I´m extremely familiar to these X-Men stories, but still) and the villain itself and some of his motivations. Also, I didn't quite dig Gina Carano's character (Angel), as she was just there for action set-pieces. And... nothing more, everything else is PERFECT, outstanding

In the end, Deadpool it´s damn good movie. It´s currently one of my top ten comic book movies of all time. Best thing about it? It´s SUCH a fresh film. Deadpool expands the superhero genre in a very imaginative way, and the movie resonates with the audience as it feels fresh and exciting and immensely re-watchable.

One of the greatest and most fun comic book movies of all time. A cinematic achievement (I would seriously nominate this movie for quite a few Oscars at least). It demonstrates that R-rated movies can be a huge hit for cinema with both critics and moviegoers alike. A really phenomenal movie, because not only it ranks as one of the most accomplished of the genre, but it is also a great eaxmple of well-made cinema. Totally recommended, a must-see! /10
