2016 is Over!

A LOT HAPPENED!

Hey everyone! What's up? Year is over and now I want to share my overall thoughts of the highlights of the year cinematically (at least on my perspective). There are a TON of movies I haven't seen yet and I really want to and a few of those are: La La Land, Arrival, Silence, Hell or High Water, Manchester by the Sea, Moana, Moonlight, Edge of Seventeen, Hacksaw Ridge, Nocturnal Animals, Sully, Your Name, Paterson, Deepwater Horizon, and A Monster Calls. Yeah, you gotta wait for the releases here in Costa Rica.

Those are movies that, given the hype they've been credited for, I'm pretty sure I would've wanted talk about because they really appeal to me and have generated a lot of conversation, but unfortunately I haven't had the chance to see them yet. Enough of that! Let's talk about 2016 in a nutshell.

Underrated: The Witch, Swiss Army Man and 10 Cloverfield Lane

The 4 Highlights of the WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Trailer!

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

It's rare to find a trilogy in which each chapter compliment, enhance each other, stand well on its own, and possess great quality in its storytelling and characters. The Lord of the Rings, The Dark Knight, Toy Story, to name a few. Being the successor to Rise and Dawn, War for the Planet to the Apes is looking forward to be a great closing chapter to a surprisingly entertaining and intellectual trilogy. Andy Serkis, you're the guy!

The 4 Highlights of the SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Trailer!

POTENTIAL RETURN TO GLORY?

2002: "OMG, THAT SPIDEY FILM WAS AMAZING!"
2004: "Hands down one of the best comic book films ever. Outstanding."
2007: "What? How? Why? Emo Peter Parker, what the hell happened?!"
2012: "Where's Tobey Maguire?! Garfield is cool though... but something's off. I've seen this before. Not fresh."
2014: "Way to screw it all up, Sony. It's Spider-Man 3 all over again. Fun, but still a hot mess. Bring us 2004 again!"
2016: "A THIRD Spider-Man version, are you fucking kidding me? Although, Tom Holland, great job in Civil War!"

December 2016: "Spider-Man: Homecoming, please be good. Please return to the days of the first two Spider-Man movies". Well yeah, these have been pretty much my reactions over the years and other people's feelings as well. Spider-Man fatigue is hurting the character's image... BUT!

If 2017 nails Spider-Man again, taking into account that the new trailer has smashed the internet, we might give favorite Marvel superhero the proper homecoming he deserves. Here are the four highlights of the trailer! There's one thing I'm sure of: Tom Holland will knock it out of the park. Again. Right, Civil War?

The 4 Highlights of THE MUMMY Trailer!

WORLD OF GODS AND MONSTERS

In a world of reboots and remakes and creation of goddamn cinematic universes... a new film will potentially start the Universal's Monsters Cinematic Universe: The Mummy. Remember 1999's The Mummy with Brendan Fraser? That's one adored cult film that many people consider "untouchable" or "sacred" if you want. I absolutely love that film, but it has a trilogy and the third chapter... wow did that disappoint. So here we are again... witnessing the return of a reboot that may (or may not) revitalize the monsters genre once again.

Up is Down

“Come find me,” the Evergreen Lady whispered to the fearful and diminished soul, “and you may go underneath. Don´t go to the fires… come find me, my dear. Or blinded forever…”
“Stop it!,” Decanus hopped up out the bed. While he was panting rapidly after the repeated dream, he just realized seconds later that the size of the dagger and the heat of the point of it in his right hand almost crossed his dog's ribs as she was sleeping by his side. His Vallhund, Loulou, being mostly energetic and emotionally uplifting whenever his owner´s skin feels bleak so she could stay warm, fell immediately to the floor and she was so terrified that her moans deafened Decanus for a few minutes. He didn't even bother asking for silence, or whatever that meant to him after that horrifying and haunting death that occurred six months ago. Although his mind was crowded of vociferous whispers and dreary images involving yells and words of love, hectic noise became a close friend of his. As close as his dog? He even started to consider “noise” as family because misery is all he's ever known… within his own room of red walls inside his brain that generate the fires and, therefore, his fury. To the surface! Go, quickly to the surface!... that was the exact order her dear sister gave him that night near Gotland, the desolate island of Sviar found in the beautiful sea of The Baltia. Although he doesn't swim, he wanted to go back underneath somehow to listen to her voice one last time. He told himself repeatedly to not be afraid and that everything would be fine at the end.
Out of the blue, cracks were heard. Decanus should've stayed up earlier because he knew the storms at midnight became drastically destructive after the Baltia Wars that happened some years ago, before he even hit early adolescence. Before deepening into an unnecessary cycle of back and forth memories, he put back his precious dagger into his coat and hugged Loulou, smiling sweetly at her and said “hide well and I'll seek you later, alright? Good girl”. Finally, he went out of his cabin and went upstairs to observe the dark horizon which it has never been as visible as he could have ever imagined. The skies were red as usual. Then, Decanus quickly took the wheel of the ship and tried to avoid the lightning rays as the wood kept cracking underneath his feet. Loulou must have been in utter shock and trembling downstairs. The winds were violent and merciless, damaging the sails and starboard. It was just like the hell that he and her sister went through… except for one particular element.
Later that night, one of the most marvelous creatures of The Northern Coast arose within the perilous storm: half a dozen of fire-breathing seals from the north of The Baltia suddenly invaded the port side of the miraculously not yet destroyed ship. To Decanus´ surprise, they didn't breathe fire to attack… but to communicate. Distinctive and bizarre ardent orange and red figures burned some sails and struggled to become understandable to Decanus who was trying to read their eloquent yet confusing language. Standing still, shocked, regardless of the physical pain he had gone through, he witnessed the passive fireballs that smoked into thin air within seconds… but many fires went upside down. Though some were still burning sails for sure, some fireballs shot directly to Decanus went under surface just before they could burn the flesh and blood of the young teenager. Nonetheless, one by one they were all struck by deadly rays. No one survived. They all fell out of the ship As soon as they all passed away quickly enough, the aggressive winds and rain ceased and at last! Earth was visible as Decanus kept a weather eye on the horizon for a few seconds. A hopeful yet afraid smile came off his cheeks as his jaw rested on the wheel.
His ship, The Ruby Twins, was drawing nearer and nearer to Decanus' infamous destination, Evergreen Valley, for the blade in in his coat was burning. Decanus took a long breath and searched for the water he had stored in a little bottle which was strongly tied to the bottom of the mast near the wheel. Just after he drank a bit, he then complained, “So if Thor really exists… since when did he send those creatures? Six, six seals or whatever they are since she... w-why not… butterflies or Vallhunds or… Loulou? Loulou!”.
But so he remembered. As soon as he reached the door to his cabinet, he remembered he had told him to hide so he could proceed with the next step of the game. “Loulou! Where are you sweetie? I´m gonna get y-,” the little Vallhund sprinted at his owner looking for warmth. “Hey buddy, what’s wrong? It´s OK, storm’s done. Wanna eat somethin’? No? Gosh, Amy… I need you. I'm “ridicously” lost without you”.
His sister's name was Amelia, and she used to call his little brother Decanus as Dean. He always thought Amelia hardworking and responsible because of all the duties and negotiations she had to do with not so trustworthy merchants along The Baltia, although his and her reputation along the seas was not recognized as a trajectory to be admired. They both lived sneaking on people's noses and stealing money from Vikings in their camps near the coasts of Sviar. One could affirm that both Decanus and Amelia were considered juvenile Vikings. One day in Stockholm, capital of the respectable kingdom, Amelia gave him as a present a journal of his uncle who had been part of the Baltia Wars. Strange yet astounding creatures such as the fire-breathing seals were recorded and analyzed within many pages of the journal. On the back of the journal, a dagger was attached to it with a red bow, favorite color of both siblings. “This is meant for you,” Amelia told his little brother smoothly, “our uncle gave it to me… but I'm sure a brave little kid like would find some better use of the wonderful knowledge found within here! What? “Knowledge”? Um… it´s like information that a person can acquire… excuse me, “gain”, through… I don't know, watching living and nonliving things, listening to music or people… you know, daily events. It's all about perception and interpretation as our uncle used to say. Language. In fact… look, see these creatures? These are the Infereals, or fire-breathing seals. These are rarely seen on The Baltia as their habitat is the whole coast of Sviar, but legend says that whenever seals appear before you get deep into the vast seas of The Baltia they tell you to “wake up” before you get stuck forever. I certainly don´t understand what that means… but I´m sure water and ground meet for a reason,  you know?”.
Memories. The good and useful ones were back. Of course! Six seals in six months. It's the first time he had seen such creatures in a storm and it felt like Hell. The seas were turning red, which was no good sign whatsoever. However, Evergreen Valley was just a few miles away as he looked through his small telescope, observing the narrow passage leading up to the lake valley. Legend says, no one has even survived getting in there. But so he realized: he had to be the fish for once. What if the surface and the sky were Hell? What if Heaven was underneath, green as he had always dreamed of it before he was in peace with his sister by his side. So he did the absurd: he went starboard and port back and forth, pushing both as we was running towards each other to reach the other side. Loulou was confused about this strange behavior and barked at him. It all happened so fast that the ship suddenly went upside down and was standing still. The skies were blue and the surface was not the surface anymore. Loulou was not visible anymore.

The Evergreen Lady suddenly appeared before Dean´s startled eyes who was holding to a the biggest mast. Emerald, pine, mint, and seaweed colors invaded his mind. The room inside his brain was no longer red. So, the Lady closed his eyes and whispered to his ear: “you're unblinded forever”.
And at last: She was there, glowing her beautiful and emerald dress, which was surprising to Dean because he had memorized her sister's clothes and that was not familiar. Loulou was just by Dean's side with green eyes. The current scenario was just getting as bizarre as it could ever get. “Amelia? Amy! It's me, Dean! Your brother!”. He hugged her with all his childlike but mighty strength.
“Dean.. You little bastard! You listened to me! You got it!”
     “... What?”
“I was wrong. This is not the Hell I envisioned. This is Paradise, and I was wrong by telling you to go up the surface… no time for further explanations. That comes later! But for now, look”. She blinked at him.

Dean saw himself into the mirror and so one thing of many became clear. As soon as he saw his glowing seaweed eyes reflected upon him, he knew that the Evergreen Lady was no longer a legend. Ladies or seals or whatever strange creature, language and communication was the key. His dagger in his coat was as cold as the north coast of Sviar. Dean was no longer the darkness that blinded light right where his heart was.

ALPHAS!

KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS - Movie Review

STORYTELLING CELEBRATION

Solid quality among animated movies has wowed the world since 2014: The Lego Movie, Inside Out, Zootopia... and oh boy, Kubo and the Two Strings absolutely joins this particular list. Welcome to another gem of stop-motion animated cinema. It's truly fantastic. Remember Coraline and The Nightmare Before Christmas? Yeah, non-brainer: this movie's on par with them.

SAUSAGE PARTY - Movie Review

HIGHWAY TO HELL (Food Edition)

When was the last time someone told you that a movie about food with a lot of swears in their quite sophisticated vocabulary actually existed? Get prepared for the major R-rated raunchy comedy of the year in the world of animation ('cause Deadpool took that title in the live-action dimension of cinema).

THE BLACK WIDOW

As soon as her mother fell hard to the ground, the cat jump scared immediately by her certainly angry yell. “Stop messing up!,” the furious spider yelled at her daughter as her skin turned darker, “If you keep up with this immature behaviour of yours, I’ll scratch you, all right? Now go to your room, whiskers.” The cat went her way back fast to her bed with her mouse-shaped toy. She just wanted to play and have some fun with her mama! She didn't mean to demolish her mother’s spider web. “It was just an honest accident!” she said to herself. She knew the spider-web was precious to her because of all the detailed arrangements her mother did to it. “If I only got my mommy back” the cat said sorrowfully...

JUDY HOPPS VOICES (Zootopia)

THE BUNNY THAT NEVER GIVES UP

POTENTIAL SPOILERS OF THE MOVIE OVER HERE

Before I start... I'm not the best at drawing by far. Plus, with a mouse... It's too FREAKING hard. But hey, I'm trying! Try Everything ;) And I intend to get better.

We all fell in love with Judy Hopps in Zootopia. Such an optimistic and fearless character against all the odds in such a hard world to live in: the adult world, the one where you get to look for a job that makes you feel happy and satisfied.

But every great character (in my opinion, the best in a truly great film) has theirs flaws, fears, and things that make her weak but strong at the same time. Clichéd? Maybe, but it doesn't matter here, because her character design ad development is beautiful to watch. Let's take a look!

Spoiler Thoughts on SUICIDE SQUAD!

INSANE, BEAUTIFUL CHAOS

How to make a villain relatable? Do criminals deserve mercy? Once again, an extremely divisive DC movie among critics and fans, and for the first time... I'm actually in the positive side. Many call this film as "another cheesy generic product of the bunch". I call it a "bold and unique story of damaged guys trying to get redeemed". Even though it goes to ambitious levels by the end of the film, the story feels claustrophobic within the complex psyche of the characters and their personal insecurities. That's the whole point. Despite its generic plot points, it feels different.

That's what makes this movie, despite the flaws, beautiful: a world of chaos and no real good guys. One where people fight their demons in order to avoid the nonredeemable state of pure evil. How? Let's talk about it!

THE JUNGLE BOOK - Movie Review

WHEN THE REMAKE IS BETTER!

Remakes don't often work. Sometimes is just a complete failure. But there are some films that make the exception. This year's The Jungle Book is one of the most risky Disney projects among other previous live-action adaptations, such as Cinderella, Maleficient, and Alice in Wonderland. However, as much as they had successful results at the box office, they didn't quite generate enough love globally. Some have been average, some good, but neither really great. Can The Jungle Book break the "curse"?

HOSTILE BORDER - Movie Review

"THERE IS NO IN BETWEEN"

You're either good or bad, right? Hm. This is the story about an immigrant named Claudia who gets deported from the U.S and is sent to Mexico to live with her father, who doesn't have a good relationship with his daughter. Claudia has the desire to make it back to her supposed homeland with her mother through hostile borders, but she must overcome personal conflicts through her journey that would test her the woman she really is: a criminal... or not.

Very few times is the independent film that feels like a big-budget one, specially a good one. Well, Hostile Border or Pocha: Manifest Destiny manages to be a well-told story with deep themes and one that features one of the most interesting and grounded female characters in the past few years. Emotional, intense, well-acted, and with controversial yet real subjects conveyed, this is one of the most impressive independent films with its tight script and direction. Here are the highlights of the movie!

DR. STRANGE: Lo Mejor del Teaser Trailer!

STRANGECEPTION

¿Inception? ¿Batman Begins? ¿The Prestige? ¿O incluso un poco a The Matrix? Anyone? No way.

SUICIDE SQUAD: Lo Mejor del Trailer #2!

BALLROOM BLITZ!

This movie looks... just... beautiful.

Because, you know... the voices. Además, básciamente un 90% de las tomas en el trailer dan mucho de qué hablar (en serio, ver a Captain Boomerang pelear sosteniendo un muñeco de unicornio... you don´t see that shit everyday). Así que bueno! Lo más destacado a continuación! Evil vs... worse evil, I guess? Suena excelente.

FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM: Lo Mejor del Teaser Trailer!

*INSERTAR HEDWIG THEME*

You´re a wizard, Hawking... *ejm* perdón, Newt Scamander. Pues sí! El mundo mágico está de vuelta! Y esta vez... en New York (?). Hm, that's a little bit weird, isn't it?

Like seriously.

Rogue One (Star Wars) y Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them contando historias más allá de sus fronteras... looking awesome.

COMIC-BOOK MOVIES THAT NEED TO HAPPEN (Top 5)

REIGN OF THE GENRE

Long are the days where you get only one comic-book movie every two years. But right now, we are practically getting a new every two months or so. Yes, it might get a little exhausting for many people, but the genre keeps reinventing itself and gives new and fresh air every once in a while: Bryan Singer with X-Men, then Sam Raimi with Spider-Man, Christopher Nolan with The Dark Knight Trilogy, Joss Whedon with The Avengers, Ryan Reynolds knocking it out of his self'-referential park with Deadpool, and so on.

It´s 2016, and both fans and casual moviegoers are open to more comic-book movie experiences (or at least that´s what I think). There have been many projects trying to get the green light and others that didn't deliver for what they promised. Even so, there are MANY STORIES yet to be told, much more than the typical save-the-day-and-defeat-the-enemy-and-save-the-girl film (don't get me wrong, Deadpool is one of the few great exceptions). Speaking of Deadpool, could we get more R-rated movies? Wolverine 3 is on it's way... and it won't be the last of its kind for sure!

5. The Killing Joke

ROGUE ONE: Lo Mejor del Teaser Trailer!

I REBEL...

Star Wars está de vuelta. A rebellion built on hope.

DEADPOOL (Movie Review)

MOCKERY AT ITS FINEST

The regenerate degenerate. The story about a guy who has an insane fucked up sense of humor and even got more fucked up by a guy named Francis (oh, you dick), and he seeks revenge and the love of his perfect significant other, Vanessa. This guy is Wade Wilson, the Merc with a Mouth, the perfect Valentine´s day date, the most honorable superhero of all time. Right?

Well, look at him below. I guess he would give you a slightly different answer. One of the most anticipated movies of 2016... and oh my God, did this deliver! Both critics and audiences have praised it. These are my thoughts on Deadpool. I freaking loved every single minute of it. Why?

5 MOVIE CHARACTERS IN LEGO MOVIES

WOULD EVERYTHING BE AWESOME?

The Lego Batman Movie just dropped their teaser trailer... and it looks badass. A totally different take on the character, as he has a very arrogant sense of humor that makes him kind of an asshole... but a lovable one, right? Well, he was like that on The Lego Movie... because he´s Batman.

As this is one of the most anticipated movies for 2017, and The Lego Movie was a gigantic success back on 2014 that, is it possible to make another "Lego Movie" of a popular character that makes the audience fall in love it? Hm, if there is one versatile brand that can make everything look cool, that´s Lego, guys!

So! Here are my five characters that would make (possibly) an extremely entertaining and appealing movie for everyone! Maybe... hell yeah, if they do it right, bring it on!

HAN SOLO
