JUDY HOPPS VOICES (Zootopia)

THE BUNNY THAT NEVER GIVES UP

POTENTIAL SPOILERS OF THE MOVIE OVER HERE

Before I start... I'm not the best at drawing by far. Plus, with a mouse... It's too FREAKING hard. But hey, I'm trying! Try Everything ;) And I intend to get better.

We all fell in love with Judy Hopps in Zootopia. Such an optimistic and fearless character against all the odds in such a hard world to live in: the adult world, the one where you get to look for a job that makes you feel happy and satisfied.

But every great character (in my opinion, the best in a truly great film) has theirs flaws, fears, and things that make her weak but strong at the same time. Clichéd? Maybe, but it doesn't matter here, because her character design ad development is beautiful to watch. Let's take a look!

1. Goals and Obstacles

That one line below she says in the movie is hard not to agree with. It's totally impossible. We all are the brave bunny Judy Hopps at one point in our lives. Sometimes to reach our goal we take for granted that the path will be just another easy game to take on. But hell no! The word "mess" becomes our second name or our best friend by the time. But hey... who says being a bit messy is a bad thing? What a great, lively action hero!

Mistakes totally let us see the world from another perspective! Upside down is the name of the superpower of this word, and we wouldn't even be half the person we would be in ten years if we didn't screw up (chill, there's a limit to make errors, right?). As soon as Judy messes with Nick Wilde's feelings (the lovely and sassy fox), she realizes how blind she was about society and how little did she know of other's past stories and just judged them anyway... which is something we have done, right? And what did she do? Swallow her pride and apologize selflessly to her best friend.

2. Strengths and Flaws

She. Doesn't. Give. Up. EVEER! We should learn from her. She reminds me a bit of Remy from Ratatouille here: talent can come from anywhere. Who would've thought that a stubborn yet immensely lovely bunny could be the most audacious and fearless cop Zootopia has ever seen? And she accepted her weaknesses regarding prejudice, because the division of predators and prey comes to an end because of her personal redemption towards her best friend: a fox, who reminds her of her bullies when she was younger.

Her definite flaw? Mmm, maybe her prejudice, yeah. Her friendship with Nick Wilde gets muddled specially in the turning point of the story because of her long lasting fear since childhood, which ultimately results as insulting for her friend. Why? Everybody has a preliminary idea of someone at first sight or when we just met someone, no matter how insignificant it may be. The difference? Judging. As Nick thought he finally found trust and loyalty in Judy, Judy's secrets are revealed in a critical point of the story where friendship must be tested... and disappointment comes in. But...

3. Loves and Hates

More than her job and her dreams at this point of the story (start of the third act), she realizes the true value of friendship and companionship. She knows she failed Nick in terms of mutual respect. In this very emotional scene, Judy swallows her pride and says the following (I actually teared up)

"Wait, uh wait - listen! I - I know you'll never forgive me! And I don't blame you. I wouldn't forgive either. I was ignorant, and... irresponsible... and small-minded. But predators shouldn't suffer because of my mistakes. I have to fix this. But I can't do it without you. And... and after we're done, you can hate me, and that'll be fine, because I was a horrible friend, and I hurt you. And you... and you can walk away knowing you were right all along. I really am..."

Beautiful character moment. Seriously!

She's not a hateful person. She realizes how deeply she hates to fail another precious being to her. And that's a good thing, I think. Another strength to my favorite cop bunny, Judy Hopps!!!

4. Dreams and Fears

Well, it's pretty simple: She keeps dreaming of being the best ever in her dream job. And while she succeeds by making a big ideological difference in the whole city, she keeps stuff personal rather than "saving the world". She never imagined her actions would have such consequences in the notion of other animal's minds towards discrimination (yeah, that's quite a topic throughout the film)

Fearless. Except when it comes to very personal stuff. She doesn't even think that the possibility of failing to live up to her expectations and ambitious dreams might happen anytime soon. Again, it comes to very personal stuff: failing the ones she loves. We can all relate to that, right?

What's Judy's secret??? She loves more than she hates. That's what makes her successful with all the obstacles, complications, and mistakes around the series of events. Her dreams and her exciting spirit it's what keeps her alive. And how to relate to her? Because along the ambitious way, friends may be lost or almost lost. Judy proved her true value as a person (or as a sneaky bunny) to the best friend she's ever had.

I say it and I'll keep saying it: this world needs more Judy Hopps. She may not be perfect, but that's why she's so awesome. Through experience and youth she gets the things done with someone loyal and valuable by her side.

ALPHAS!

So! What do you think about this character? Do you love her or not so much? Is she one of the highlights of 2016? What else would you add to her? Would you like to see her in a sequel?
