The 4 Highlights of THE MUMMY Trailer!

WORLD OF GODS AND MONSTERS

In a world of reboots and remakes and creation of goddamn cinematic universes... a new film will potentially start the Universal's Monsters Cinematic Universe: The Mummy. Remember 1999's The Mummy with Brendan Fraser? That's one adored cult film that many people consider "untouchable" or "sacred" if you want. I absolutely love that film, but it has a trilogy and the third chapter... wow did that disappoint. So here we are again... witnessing the return of a reboot that may (or may not) revitalize the monsters genre once again.

Intense action: From the promising plane scene to some shots involving Tom Cruise's character beneath water surface and having a bad time in a bus, the action sequences look pretty damn intense. If the movie manages to create real life-breathing characters that we care about, the action could pay off as memorable and worth watching in the movie theatre.

Off the top of my head, two films that delivered in that aspect are Mad Max: Fury Road and Edge of Tomorrow. Both are immensely entertaining and really good movies overall. Tom Cruise doesn't seem to get enough of doing crazy stunts, huh? That's impressive dude!

WTF moments: "What? How the fuck did he survive? Did the mummy bring him back to life? What about the others? Is Tom Cruise a mummy or something like that... whaaaat, what the hell is happening?!"

This is my favorite thing about trailers. Other than showing striking imagery, provoking head-scratching questions is, I think, the main goal of trailers. And yes! What consequences will Tom Cruise have throughout the film? Also, the tone and environment feels creepy. Looks like an actual scene of a monster movie which I appreciate. Execution is another thing to discuss about once the movie arrives, but hey, scary and creepy imagery like this could deliver.

Menacing villain: "Welcome to a new world... of gods and monsters". First of all, that shot is sick. The eye split plus the weird skin change and the look of her eyes at the end is a pretty good money shot. She looks scary and menacing, offering a potentially entertaining and well executed antagonist for us to enjoy and fear.

A lot are saying "ohhh that's bullshit, looks like god-awful dancer Enchantress from Suicide Squad!" Well, that may be just physical resemblance, not actual personality. Is it a flaw that she resembles a popular (or infamous... hey, I personally like her) character? Mmm not really. Are they both supernatural forces? Yes, they are, but their character motivations may be different. It's all about execution, and this upcoming, at least visually, looks bad-ass, and I'm pretty excited about that. Plus, I appreciate that they're not doing Imhotep again from the 1999 version, but a princess called Ahmanet.

Interesting cast: Tom Cruise as the protagonist can draw his fan base, but Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?! Couldn't be more intrigued about this casting decision. This character is a landmark on building psychologically complex personas who embody mystery and chaos, and Russell Crowe can bring it all the way.

He's already a consolidated in the business, and it really woudn't be a surprise if he's a major player in this movie, considering his presence on screen and his promotion in the trailer. Them? Face to face? The plot thickens.

Will it deliver? Other than some awful sound effects (screams from Tom Cruise crashing in the plane and from the female villain between the words of Russell Crowe), this brand new take on the mummy story could, after all, be a refreshing ride for fans of action, adventure, and monster movies. Much of the success of 1999's The Mummy was because it was consistently fun, well told, and the cast was extremely likable. It was a classic adventure journey, similar to the feel of Indiana Jones flicks.

As long as the movie entertains and manages to introduce the Monster Universe successfully, we may be witnessing the start of an era regarding the monster genre in film. With Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe in the front lead, it would be a real disappointment if this doesn't deliver. Looking forward for next trailers and a hopefully good movie!
