The 4 Highlights of the SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Trailer!

POTENTIAL RETURN TO GLORY?

2002: "OMG, THAT SPIDEY FILM WAS AMAZING!"
2004: "Hands down one of the best comic book films ever. Outstanding."
2007: "What? How? Why? Emo Peter Parker, what the hell happened?!"
2012: "Where's Tobey Maguire?! Garfield is cool though... but something's off. I've seen this before. Not fresh."
2014: "Way to screw it all up, Sony. It's Spider-Man 3 all over again. Fun, but still a hot mess. Bring us 2004 again!"
2016: "A THIRD Spider-Man version, are you fucking kidding me? Although, Tom Holland, great job in Civil War!"

December 2016: "Spider-Man: Homecoming, please be good. Please return to the days of the first two Spider-Man movies". Well yeah, these have been pretty much my reactions over the years and other people's feelings as well. Spider-Man fatigue is hurting the character's image... BUT!

If 2017 nails Spider-Man again, taking into account that the new trailer has smashed the internet, we might give favorite Marvel superhero the proper homecoming he deserves. Here are the four highlights of the trailer! There's one thing I'm sure of: Tom Holland will knock it out of the park. Again. Right, Civil War?

Classic Spidey comedy: One of the most crucial personality traits of Spider-Man is throwing quips here and there at thieves and enemies... or pretty much everyone, really. That small segment of the robbery scene from the trailer is, honestly, what you would see in the most classic comic books of Spider-Man. Goofy but believable because even at the end of the scene, Spider-Man says to himself "that was awesome!". He's relatable. That's what makes him so lovable across the world.

Tobey Maguire actually delivered with the lines he was given in order to have funny and lighthearted moments. Andrew Garfield's charisma shines in both The Amazing Spider-Man couple of movies. But there's something about Tom Holland that makes him so real, at least in my eyes. Maybe it's the costume or something. Nevertheless, his delivery is pitch perfect because his physical and verbal performance steals the scene. And I'm sure there's plenty of more moments like this in the final cut!

Double life balance: Hands down, the element that gave Spider-Man 2 so much air and strong narrative to its core was the balance of the alter ego: being Spider-Man and Peter Parker at the same time. Those ten seconds up there are enough of what we might expect from the movie. No sound or dialogue whatsoever. Put attention to that imagery in a short span of time. THAT'S Spider-Man. That's the soul of the character, and it has been beautifully explored before, and it can be nailed again.

Secret? Keep the focus on him, on his early years as Spider-Man while he's in the middle of high school facing mundane problems: struggling to talk to the girl he likes, having the desire to prove himself, growing up... there could be so much going on in his head and heart. Another secret? Keep the script tight. Don't throw unnecessary ingredients just because. Give him the tools he needs so he can develop himself and the story itself. Which brings me to...

Blending to the MCU: Civil War marked the return of, arguably, the best character Stan Lee has ever created. Even with that said, he needs help. He's been hurt recently because the stories that were told in the previous three films were... uneven. It had good moments regarding character moments, but it wasn't enough because it felt too repetitive (Uncle Ben here and there with flashbacks or not, for example). What's the best card Marvel can play? The one that started it all: Iron man.

Robert Downey Jr. as the mentor for 15-year-old Peter Parker makes sense. Peter admires him a lot, and he needs a parental figure, given the fact that he's young and still learning about his capabilities. Don't bring Uncle Ben back! We know the story already! Give us new stories worth investing on. That scene up there? Yes, it's pretty funny, but! The more I think about it, that hug was kind of bittersweet to Peter wasn't it? A hug from a potential paternal figure must be important to him, considering the tragic demise of Uncle Ben. Yeah, I know, Iron man wouldn't make a great father, but still! Fresh direction for the protagonist.

Good Spider-Man villain after 13 years... finally? Please? Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus are two great villains from Spider-Man's large gallery of antagonists. There have been... seven other villains since then. Holy shit, they bombed big time. Five Spider-Man movies and only two villains have earned their scenes. That's kind of discouraging. Or is it...?  Michael Keaton as The Vulture? I don't see how on Earth would Marvel blow that up. Keaton's previous experience in the business (played Batman in 1989 and 1992) gives us hope because he's awesome. Remember Beetlejuice? He was the title character, in case you didn't know.

This upcoming villain looks menacing, cool (I don't know why that mask reminded me of Bane from The Dark Knight Rises... which is a good compliment, I think), and some shots other than above's at the end of the trailer reveal history between both Peter and Vulture. Why? Watch the trailer and look at Peter's costume when he's sort of bleeding in the ground. It's old and unprofessional. Interesting. Juicy!

Return to form? PLEASE! Three different iterations of the character in less than 20 years is just not fair for such a beloved icon within pop culture. I know, I know! There are other characters! Where is Black Widow's own movie, for fuck's sake? Yes, I also demand that, but! This character is so timeless and beloved and relevant to everyone who has connected with him that he needs an actual good movie, so he can restore his image and not just be an Internet meme for eternity.

Sony screwed up with Spider-Man 3 as the studios sneaked in and messed up Sam Raimi's vision (which, originally, had The Vulture, by the way). The Amazing Spider-Man series felt like a set up product for more cheap products to come and a cash grab basically (Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield did not deserve that given their excellent performances). This could be it. No origin story again (thanks!), no fucking three major villains all at once (at least that's what it seems like), and the right feels. A coming of age film that could mean Spider-Man's return to glory. Holland is a guarantee.

That scene where he's struggling to bind the ship together? Direct homage to Spider-Man 2. Good sign. I have faith in this one! One of my most anticipated films of 2017 for sure!
