2016 is Over!

A LOT HAPPENED!

Hey everyone! What's up? Year is over and now I want to share my overall thoughts of the highlights of the year cinematically (at least on my perspective). There are a TON of movies I haven't seen yet and I really want to and a few of those are: La La Land, Arrival, Silence, Hell or High Water, Manchester by the Sea, Moana, Moonlight, Edge of Seventeen, Hacksaw Ridge, Nocturnal Animals, Sully, Your Name, Paterson, Deepwater Horizon, and A Monster Calls. Yeah, you gotta wait for the releases here in Costa Rica.

Those are movies that, given the hype they've been credited for, I'm pretty sure I would've wanted talk about because they really appeal to me and have generated a lot of conversation, but unfortunately I haven't had the chance to see them yet. Enough of that! Let's talk about 2016 in a nutshell.

Underrated: The Witch, Swiss Army Man and 10 Cloverfield Lane

The 4 Highlights of the WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES Trailer!

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

It's rare to find a trilogy in which each chapter compliment, enhance each other, stand well on its own, and possess great quality in its storytelling and characters. The Lord of the Rings, The Dark Knight, Toy Story, to name a few. Being the successor to Rise and Dawn, War for the Planet to the Apes is looking forward to be a great closing chapter to a surprisingly entertaining and intellectual trilogy. Andy Serkis, you're the guy!

The 4 Highlights of the SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Trailer!

POTENTIAL RETURN TO GLORY?

2002: "OMG, THAT SPIDEY FILM WAS AMAZING!"
2004: "Hands down one of the best comic book films ever. Outstanding."
2007: "What? How? Why? Emo Peter Parker, what the hell happened?!"
2012: "Where's Tobey Maguire?! Garfield is cool though... but something's off. I've seen this before. Not fresh."
2014: "Way to screw it all up, Sony. It's Spider-Man 3 all over again. Fun, but still a hot mess. Bring us 2004 again!"
2016: "A THIRD Spider-Man version, are you fucking kidding me? Although, Tom Holland, great job in Civil War!"

December 2016: "Spider-Man: Homecoming, please be good. Please return to the days of the first two Spider-Man movies". Well yeah, these have been pretty much my reactions over the years and other people's feelings as well. Spider-Man fatigue is hurting the character's image... BUT!

If 2017 nails Spider-Man again, taking into account that the new trailer has smashed the internet, we might give favorite Marvel superhero the proper homecoming he deserves. Here are the four highlights of the trailer! There's one thing I'm sure of: Tom Holland will knock it out of the park. Again. Right, Civil War?

Spoiler Thoughts on SUICIDE SQUAD!

INSANE, BEAUTIFUL CHAOS

How to make a villain relatable? Do criminals deserve mercy? Once again, an extremely divisive DC movie among critics and fans, and for the first time... I'm actually in the positive side. Many call this film as "another cheesy generic product of the bunch". I call it a "bold and unique story of damaged guys trying to get redeemed". Even though it goes to ambitious levels by the end of the film, the story feels claustrophobic within the complex psyche of the characters and their personal insecurities. That's the whole point. Despite its generic plot points, it feels different.

That's what makes this movie, despite the flaws, beautiful: a world of chaos and no real good guys. One where people fight their demons in order to avoid the nonredeemable state of pure evil. How? Let's talk about it!

DR. STRANGE: Lo Mejor del Teaser Trailer!

STRANGECEPTION

¿Soy el único que piensa que, basándose en este prólogo, esta peícula parece de Christopher Nolan? ¿Inception? ¿Batman Begins? ¿The Prestige? ¿O incluso un poco a The Matrix? Anyone? Se lo juro, si no fuera por el logo de Marvel al principio y al final, jamás pensaría que fuera una película de esa marca. No way.

COMIC-BOOK MOVIES THAT NEED TO HAPPEN (Top 5)

REIGN OF THE GENRE

Long are the days where you get only one comic-book movie every two years. But right now, we are practically getting a new every two months or so. Yes, it might get a little exhausting for many people, but the genre keeps reinventing itself and gives new and fresh air every once in a while: Bryan Singer with X-Men, then Sam Raimi with Spider-Man, Christopher Nolan with The Dark Knight Trilogy, Joss Whedon with The Avengers, Ryan Reynolds knocking it out of his self'-referential park with Deadpool, and so on.

It´s 2016, and both fans and casual moviegoers are open to more comic-book movie experiences (or at least that´s what I think). There have been many projects trying to get the green light and others that didn't deliver for what they promised. Even so, there are MANY STORIES yet to be told, much more than the typical save-the-day-and-defeat-the-enemy-and-save-the-girl film (don't get me wrong, Deadpool is one of the few great exceptions). Speaking of Deadpool, could we get more R-rated movies? Wolverine 3 is on it's way... and it won't be the last of its kind for sure!
